Some Interesting Digital Media Entrepreneurship Projects

Zattoo is a proprietary peer-to-peer online television protocol with a desktop player that brings much of the traditional “TV experience” to your computer. Most of the channels are international and includes five BBC Channels, CNBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, and MTV. Founded in 2005.

 

NewsTrust.net is a non-profit online news aggregator site centered around a rating system by which users can gauge an article’s accuracy, context, fairness, importance, sources, style, and other attributes through a 0-5 star system. Launched in November 2006.

 

Link TV is a non-profit American television network aimed at providing diverse perspectives on national and international issues. Linktv.org provides some of the network’s content online through podcasts, embeddable auto-refreshing video players, and streaming video on it’s website. The channel was first launched in December 1999

 

Miro is the Participatory Culture Foundation’s desktop program that automatically downloads video content from RSS-based “channels” and allows users to manage their online video content regardless of the source. Revision3, TED Talks, and Deustche Welle (German Public Broadcasting) use co- branded versions of Miro. Founded in 2005.

 

Everyblock is a browseable and searchable collection of data such as Craigslist entries, Flickr photos, news articles, blog entries, and other civic information such as crime, building permits, restaurant inspections for Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. Founded in 2007.

 

Hulu is an American web-based video-on-demand service that offers streaming content from primarily the site’s founders NBC Universal and News Corp. The service is supported by ads played intermittently through out the video. Publicly launched in March 2008.

 

Revision3 Corporation is an Internet “television” network that creates and distributes weekly and daily shows on niche topics. The shows are delivered directly from the site in various formats and resolutions. Currently the network regularly produces 15 original shows. Founded in 2005.

 

Blip.tv is an online service that caters to independent (not from blip) video creators. It offers free and relatively high quality storage space and an imbeddable flash player to distribute your content. It's lesser known than the mighty Google Video and YouTube but offers choices in how you want your video licenced and if you'd like ad's to generate revenue for your video.
